“Name it and Win it” Contest

Our opening team is hard at work combing over every detail in preparation for re-opening the Oak Bay Beach Hotel this spring. Lately they’ve been pondering names for our four oceanfront spa treatment rooms, and although they’ve got a few ideas of their own, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to reach out to our amazing community and ask for your ideas…

So… Name It and Win It! Give us your suggestions and if we end up choosing your idea, you will win a $25 Gift Certificate that you can use anywhere in the new hotel… including on a spa treatment in the room you named!

What we’re looking for: Given our spectacular seaside location, we are looking for ideas that are inspired by the sea. Some of our own brainstorming ideas include “Seabreeze”, “White Sand”, “Oceanic”, and “Driftwood”, but what can you come up with?

How the contest works: Well, it will all happen on Facebook. Starting Tuesday Feb 14th Fans can start posting win-worthy names right on our Facebook wall. Our team will review all the entries. If we choose the name, or names you have posted on our wall you will receive a $25 gift certificate for each name that we use. Before you take your brilliance to our Facebook page be sure to read the official contest rules!

Rules:

-You must “like” our Facebook fan page in order to enter the contest

-The names must have “something to do with the sea.”

-The winner will then be contacted through email so make sure you leave your email address.

-Once we have confirmed with our winner(s) by email, will announce the winners and their winning idea on Facebook and our blog as well on Feb 20th

-The examples we’ve already listed (seabreeze, white sand, oceanic, or driftwood) are off limits, you have to show originality with your own

-You are eligible to win up to four $25 gift certificates if we choose all four of the names you have posted.

- This is a challenge to come up with better ideas than us, so winners will only be chosen if we like your ideas better than our own, so get creative and head over to Facebook!

The Oak Bay Beach Hotel Announces Two New Hires

With Victoria BC’s newest 5 Star Hotel scheduled to reopen in just three-months time, owners of the Oak Bay Beach Hotel,  Kevin and Shawna Walker have hired two new key staff members for the hotel’s management team: Michelle Le Sage joins as hotel manager while Sarah Henderson, an employee of the original Oak Bay Beach Hotel, takes the position of rooms division manager.

“I’m pleased to welcome Michelle, and re-welcome Sarah, to our team here at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel,” said Kevin Walker, longtime owner and developer of the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. “As two accomplished hospitality professionals, I’m confident that Michelle and Sarah will help lead our hotel to success by providing superior customer service and creating incredible guest experiences.”

Relocating from Comox Valley, BC, Le Sage has spent the past 24 years working in management roles at a number of Vancouver Island hotels, including the Quality Resort Bayside, Parksville (director of sales and marketing, front office manager); Chateau Victoria Hotel & Suites, Victoria (executive assistant manager, director of food and beverage, food and beverage manager, duty manager); and Best Western Plus, The Westerly Hotel & Convention Centre, Courtenay (general manager).

In addition to her experience in the hotelier industry, Le Sage is heavily involved in her community. Some of Le Sage’s affiliations include the Rotary Club of Courtney (active board member), the Greater Victoria Eldercare Foundation (foundation member), Tourism Victoria (past director) and the BC Restaurant & Foodservices Association (past chair).

“I’m elated to return home to Victoria, the place where I spent the majority of my years working in hospitality,” said Le Sage. “And taking the role of Hotel Manager at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel, arguably what’s gearing up to be Victoria BC’s most luxurious and sought-after accommodation, is truly a dream come true.”

For returning guests to Victoria BC’s iconic hotel, The Oak Bay Beach Hotel, Henderson will be a familiar face – the new rooms division manager worked as an eco tour guide from 2002 until 2006, the year when the doors of the original Victoria BC hotel were closed in anticipation of the $52M rebuild.

After leaving her post at the original Oak Bay Beach Hotel, Henderson continued her hotelier training and worked in positions across Canada and abroad, including at The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald, Edmonton, AB (chief concierge, assistant front office manager); at The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, AB (executive housekeeper); and at Fairmont St Andrews, Scotland (executive housekeeper).

“At the end of each contract, I’d reach out to Kevin and Shawna Walker in hopes of, one day, returning to the Oak Bay Beach Hotel,” said Henderson. “I’m thrilled to see this day finally come and to be back working with the team.”

Kevin’s construction update- Jan 2012

     By Kevin Walker, Owner

Today 18 skids of light fixtures arrived into the parkade storage areas. Doug and Joe are busy inspecting and assembling each of the literally thousands of decorative fixtures. I will head down there shortly to have a look at these important features of our interior design. Of course we have strived to select fixtures that offer modern sophistication and energy efficiency and all the while continue to blend into the historic nature of our interior design.

I also have received a call from our millworkers, asking me to visit the shop soon to see the historic beams that they have been working on, the ones that we carefully stored away when we took the old hotel apart.

This is a very exciting time…the finish line is in site. Everyone right now is fixed on the weather. Sunshine is our friend, high winds and heavy rains not so much so. We have had a lot of each this past week.

We continue to run behind schedule but thankfully the roof is now sealed up and the slate tiles are actually being installed. Many of the roof top chimneys are now complete with the brick and unique chimney tops that we ordered from England.

Behind the green screen the hotel is really looking beautiful. Many of our hotel rooms are ready for wallpaper and carpet.

I can’t wait to share it with you and the travelers of the world!

Sales Update

By Brad Neufeld, Director of Sales

It’s hard to believe that another year has come and gone. Looking back on 2011, it was a momentous year in the development of the new OBBH. We finished all of the concrete work, we celebrated the removal of the crane, and most importantly from my perspective – we had our best sales year yet with more than $20M on the books when the year ended. I guess that shouldn’t be surprising given the quality of the project, the ability for clients to come for a hard-hat tour of the project, and the opportunity to see first-hand the views offered in the various properties. Nevertheless, it is extremely gratifying to watch our clients embrace the vision that we are bringing to life. 2011 saw us complete the SELL OUT of the first 3 Phases of Vacation Hotel Suites, and we have now also sold 40% of the residential condo properties in the project.

With only a few short months left until we complete, the time is rapidly running out for people to take advantage of some exciting pre-opening programs that we are making available for early buyers. Phase 4 of the Vacation Hotel Suites will be released this month, and we are calling this the “Have Your Cake And Eat It Too” program. You receive a leaseback contract from us that is 50% higher than normal, with the right to sell the property back to us after 5 years.

Don’t forget that our “Fly n Try” program continues – offering you a free weekend / three day trip to Victoria to come and see the project and our available properties. If you decide to buy with us while you are visiting, we pay for your trip! Our recent winter blast is over, so pack your golf clubs and your walking shoes, and come enjoy a weekend on the coast to see things for yourself!

We hope to see you soon!

Drama, Song & Laughter at the Seaside

The Oak Bay Beach Hotel has had many colorful people working on its payroll over the years, and two of its most memorable graduates are Steve Ivings and Lena Palermo.

Steve grew up in Victoria and learned at an early age that he liked entertaining people. In high school he studied theater and went on to become a standup comedian and cruise ship entertainer, specializing in impersonations of famous celebrities. Lena studied music and drama at the famous Julliard School in New York City, and went on to perform professionally as a singer, dancer, and actor in numerous productions across Canada and the United States. She and Steve met while working together professionally in Victoria, fell in love, and became what Steve describes as, “partners in business and in life.” Together, they planned and wrote a show called “Around the World in 80 Minutes” – a comic dramatization of cruise ship life, in which they and half a dozen fellow entertainers would perform dance numbers, songs, and hilarious impersonations. Steve felt certain that the show would be a great leap for his and Lena’s career. The only question was, who would give them a break?

“I was a longtime admirer of the ambience and character of the Oak Bay Beach Hotel,” says Steve. “And I thought it would be an ideal venue for ‘Around the World in 80 Minutes.’ I met with Kevin Walker, pitched it to him as a dinner theatre concept, and he was brave enough to give us a chance. So we rehearsed and planned and put it all together and worked out beautifully for all of us.”

The Oak Bay Beach Hotel launched the production with a special night in which Steve dressed up as a cruise ship skipper and members of the audience came up to pose for photos with “the captain.” Hotel guests who were lucky enough to attend the show say that it was fabulous entertainment. The concept was to take the audience on a “cruise” around the world, poking fun at the vulnerabilities and preoccupations of the world’s great cultures. In one number, a German folk dance starts off with a jolly “slap dance” that degenerates into a brawl. In another skit, Dean Martin sings “That’s Amore” with a troupe of curvaceous chorus girls, and is only beginning to really have fun with the situation when he is busted by his angry Italian wife. “There’s nothing better than working in front of a live audience,” says Steve. “They’ll tell you what works and what doesn’t. The crowd loved the show, but they also gave us the kind of feedback that allowed us to keep developing and refining it.”

Steve says that a big part of the show’s success was its venue. “The Oak Bay Beach Hotel was just a fabulous place for dinner theatre. The Walker’s are great hosts – somehow managing to be super friendly and informal with the guests but totally in charge and professional with every single detail at the same time. I can’t imagine how they pull it off. I guess they just love entertaining guests, so maybe those long days and long nights don’t feel like work at all. Thanks to them, and the grand meals, and that gorgeous old hotel, our show became a success almost overnight. We performed to sold-out houses every Friday and Saturday night for a couple of months, and we really had a wonderful time.”

After the show wrapped up, Lena found herself without work, so she went to Toronto to perform in television commercials. Steve soon followed her, but acting is a competitive trade, and he was obliged to take work reporting on traffic from a helicopter. “I happen to hate flying,” he said. “So I was perhaps not the best guy to be hovering and swooping over freeway traffic every morning.”  He and Lena were determined to continue with their careers, and they eventually acquired a 3,500 square foot old automotive shop in Toronto, which they converted into a theatre school, where kids could learn to sing, dance, act and develop their entertainment skills. They called it “Star Potential Studios” and they now have about 100 dedicated young students. Meanwhile they have continued acting and performing and working on their own careers.

Lena has many credits as a music director, choreographer and director for hundreds of productions with both children and adult casts.  In Toronto, she has acted in a wide variety of plays ranging from Anne of Green Gables to A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Her young students have found their own roles in productions like We Will Rock You and Mamma Mia. And Steve too, continues to act and entertain, doing stand-up comedy, special events, and acting, with credits in stage plays like The Odd Couple, Barefoot in the Park, and Mame. Apart from their lovely 4 year-old daughter Isabella (named after the famous actress of course) their proudest collaboration is Around the World in 80 Minutes.

“Around the World was our very first production with the kids,” says Steve, “and it continues to be a great vehicle for our students to develop their skills in singing, dancing and acting. We owe a debt of gratitude to Kevin and Shawna Walker, and the Oak Bay Beach Hotel was a perfect place to launch our play. The food, the atmosphere, the hospitality – everything came together perfectly, and we’re proud to think of the hotel as our alma mater.”

Kevin’s construction update

By Kevin Walker

Although we are running a bit behind schedule on the completion of the roof, progress continues at a good pace this week as the weather is so far pretty good. Inspections are complete respecting  the interior finish of our hotel units on garden level 1 and 2. Light fixtures have arrived for these floors, kitchens are in, bathrooms are complete and waiting for our custom vanities, and the rooms are truly beautiful. Carpets will follow shortly.

The crew are sealing up the main floor preparing for drywall and interior finish.
Hotel levels 2 and 3 are framed, drywall is in place and windows are complete for the most part. Soon the roof will be complete and framing of levels 4 and 5 will follow.

The pools are poured, the exterior rock work on the exterior walls is beautiful.

I can hardly wait to share it with you all. Let’s all hope for mild weather and an opportunity to pick up some time…

It is really starting to look like the world class destination resort we’ve been dreaming of…and the reservations are coming in at a great pace.

Merry Christmas to you all…2012 will be a year to remember!

Kevin
