A Guest Like No Other: Miracle the Orca’s Stay at Oak Bay Beach Hotel

The ocean has always been at the heart of Oak Bay Beach Hotel. In 1977, the tides brought us a guest unlike any other: a baby orca named Miracle. Her stay was remarkable and full of meaningful moments, leaving behind a legacy that still ripples along the shores of the Salish Sea.

Miracle was rescued near Menzies Bay on Vancouver Island, injured and unable to survive on her own. Conservationists needed a calm, secure place for her recovery, and the Oak Bay Beach Hotel’s saltwater pool was transformed into a temporary home for the young whale in just 24 hours.

Against all odds, the baby orca made a ‘miracle’ recovery over the course of 6 long months at the hotel. More than 270,000 visitors came to visit and watch her gentle spirit and remarkable resilience. To this day, Miracle is recorded as the hotel’s longest staying ‘non-residential’ guest and holds the record for receiving the most outside visitors during a single stay.

Miracle’s story didn’t end when she moved to a larger facility in 1978, her courage and charm left a lasting impression on communities across Vancouver Island. Miracle reminded everyone that orcas are intelligent and social creatures, inspiring a new respect for these magnificent animals and advancing conversations about their protection along the West Coast.

To this day, Miracle remains one of our most memorable VIP guests. A symbol of compassion and community, her story reminds us to engage authentically and dedicate time to meaningful experiences that inspire wellbeing.

Did you know that Miracle inspired the orca mosaic at the bottom of our Mineral Pool? Every time guests soak in the pool or enjoy the oceanfront views, they are surrounded by a tribute to one of Oak Bay Beach Hotel’s most extraordinary visitors.
