Commitment to Truth & Reconciliation
Ahead of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Oak Bay Beach Hotel is honoured to contribute to raising awareness and fostering understanding about Indigenous relationships within our community.
Our commitment to reconciliation extends through various initiatives aimed at educating our staff, guests, and broader community about the significance of this day and the importance of building meaningful relationships with Indigenous Peoples.
We acknowledge and respect that the land on which the Oak Bay Beach Hotel stands is the traditional territories of the Coast and Straits Salish Peoples. Specifically, we recognize the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples known today as the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations, and that their historic connections to these lands continue to this day.
Proudly Pledging with the Victoria Native Friendship Centre
The Oak Bay Beach Hotel is committed to supporting Indigenous communities through meaningful actions. We have taken the Victoria Native Friendship Centre (VNFC) Small Business Pledge, which includes a commitment to raising funds for the VNFC. Throughout September, partial proceeds from all Evening Mineral Pool Passes will be donated to the VNFC. Additionally, each Cedar Planked Wild BC Salmon dish featured in The Snug Pub will contribute to this important cause, allowing our guests to participate in our fundraising for the VNFC Small Business Pledge.
Sponsorship of the South Island Powwow
In partnership with Oak Bay Tourism, we are proud to sponsor the 2024 South Island Powwow, hosted by the Songhees Nation on September 30 at Royal Athletic Park. This event is a powerful celebration of Indigenous culture, and we are humbled by this opportunity to support this significant occasion.
Celebrating Indigenous Art
Our most recent art installation, in collaboration with Madrona Gallery, proudly features the works of Indigenous and Inuit artists, including Quvianaqtuk Pudlat, Ningiukulu Teevee, Luke Ramsey, John Lennard, and Toni Onley. Guests can experience the rich cultural expressions and narratives embodied in these pieces throughout all public spaces within the hotel.
Staff Education and Engagement
The Oak Bay Beach Hotel is dedicated to ensuring that our staff are well-informed and engaged in the reconciliation process. Through the Moosehide Campaign, we are offering each team member the opportunity to participate by wearing a moose hide pin and learning about the campaign’s mission to end gender-based violence. Staff members are encouraged to wear their pins proudly as part of their work uniform.
The Oak Bay Beach Hotel remains steadfast in our dedication to fostering a community that values and honours Indigenous cultures and relationships. We invite our guests, staff, and community members to join us in these efforts and to reflect on the importance of reconciliation in shaping a more inclusive and respectful future.
